We passed a milestone a few weeks back regarding auto-enrolment and pensions; they are now part of every business employing staff. In this weeks sound bite, I am looking at how far we have travelled and what to expect. But first, did you see the squabble that Trump is having with his secretary of state over IQ. You cannot make this stuff up…
What Are IQ Tests?
I have not done an IQ test in years, but when I did, I always thought they were more about being good at answering that kind of question. The IQ or Intelligence Quotient is allocated from a test score. But I was pleased to discover that Mensa UK ( top 2%) now accepts results from more than 200 different tests, including its own.
Some last an hour and some have no time limit. The classical test does not tell the whole story. I have met amazing people that had limited educational opportunity but were sharp as a knife and great business people. Would they test well?
Of course, Mr T has walked into more controversy, and it is feeding the internet with speculation about his own IQ.
The Trump IQ Challenge
US President Donald Trump has challenged his Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, to an IQ test. He remarked in a magazine interview when asked about reports that Mr Tillerson had called him a moron, which apparently he did after a meeting in July.
The US Secretary of state ( Rex Tillerson ) has the job of determining US foreign policy. The problem seems to be that Mr T has his own ideas and cannot avoid interfering and undermining his Secretary of State. Then, rather than sort the issue in private, both are taking to Twitter and the press to communicate.
Last week Mr Tillerson called a news conference to dismiss reports that he was considering quitting. Earlier in the month, Mr Trump publicly undercut the former Texas oilman by tweeting that he was “wasting his time” trying to negotiate with nuclear-armed North Korea. Tillerson responded via the New York Times saying he was astonished at how little Mr Trump grasps the basics of foreign policy.
Mr Trump is apparently irritated by Mr Tillerson’s body language during meetings where he is said to roll his eyes or slouch when he disagrees with the decisions of his boss.
These are powerful, intelligent men you would have thought they could square their differences behind closed doors.
Will Rex Tillerson get pensioned off? Who knows. But as former ExxonMobil chief executive, he would have had pension contributions of between 3% and 9% of his salary plus stock options. I think he will be comfortable enough. What about for the rest of us? Auto-enrolment and pensions are now part of every business.
Auto-enrolment and Pensions
Since the 1st of October 2017, if you are a new employer and you have just made your first pay date, you must auto enrol immediately. So from now on PAYE, NIC and AE ( auto-enrollment ) will go hand in hand. In this weeks sound bite, we look at where we have come from and what to expect. Payroll has become yet more complex. If you need help, just get in touch.
