Alan and Helen Long started the business in 2001 with no staff and just 2 computers and an office. The business now operates from 5 offices and employs qualified and unqualified staff and is involved in the training of future qualified accountants. We have come a long way in a short time.
Everyone has a history and it is what makes us what we are. The distinctive style of The Long Partnership comes in part from our very different backgrounds and experiences that we have brought together and distilled into the business you see today.
Alan is from London and having completed a degree at St. Andrews University trained with Grant Thornton before returning to Scotland where he has been ever since. In 1986 he joined forces with Neil Price, who had recently left the HIDB, and over the next 15 years they built a very successful single office practice. They went their separate ways in 2001 and Alan and Helen set up The Long Partnership. Neil Price has also continued to build a successful practice with his new partners amalgamating with other firms along the way, although still a single office. It seems that 1986 was the planting of a seed that has now resulted in more than one successful accountancy firm in Scotland, although they are quite different in character.
Helen is from Orkney and completed her professional qualifications while employed at the firm run by Alan and Neil rising quickly within that firm from preparing accounts to being a manager overseeing the accounts staff and dealing with tax and accounts for a wide variety of the firm’s clients. You can’t keep a good woman down!
Alan and Helen Long have now worked together for over 25 years. They were not married at the start but have been together as couple for over 20 years and are still happily married! Both have been married before and between them have 7 children.
The business was set up as a partnership in 2001, hence the name. However, in 2004 we took our own tax advice and transferred the business to an unlimited company. The business has grown and developed steadily over the last few years, partly through amalgamation with other practices including:
2008 Stuart Whiteley (Thurso).
2011 Graeme M Fraser & Co (Inverness and Elgin)
2012 A A Mackenzie & Co. (Dingwall)
The company now operates from 5 offices serving a wide variety of clients over a large area of Scotland. The business provides a wide range of accounting and company secretarial services as well as taxation compliance and consultancy. We are always pleased to discuss any of our services at any time and enquiries can be made to any of our offices.
Cathel Fraser leads the team in Elgin. Cathel is an experienced Chartered Accountant who was formerly in business with his father, Graeme, operating offices at various times in Inverness, Dingwall, Nain, Elgin and elsewhere. In keeping with the family nature of the business, Cathel’s wife Lizanne works alongside him in Elgin looking after payrolls and similar services operated from that office.
Mike Evans leads the team in Dingwall. He is a chartered accountant with considerable experience gained outside of a professional office and indeed still holds a number of non executive directorships. Nonetheless he has also gained a wealth of knowledge of small business, having run his own successful practice for a number of years. Mike’s wife Jenni is also a chartered accountant and works alongside him in Dingwall.
Alan and Helen lead the teams in Inverness, Thurso and Kirkwall and so, as well as knowing the A9 very well, they have to be good sailors.
The Registered Office of the company is located offshore at 1 Castle Street, Kirkwall, Orkney, KW15 1HD. It does not get us any great benefits but it does sound good.
