I thought I had it all planned. Christmas was starting to appear in the shops, and so I found a topic for this week’s Sound Bite that reflected the Christmas (or January) mood. Tax payments and tax refunds.
Then comes along Theresa (pass me a lozenge) May and coughs her way onto many of the front pages and on all the news websites.What am I to do? You either think she is a hero battling through her speech despite the setbacks or you are in despair and wondering where the current government is leading us.
Leadership and Defining Moments
Public speaking is fraught with challenge, the leader’s speech for any political party is the pinnacle of the conference. It has to be the speech that sets the course for the battle ahead. The address is the Agincourt moment think Henry the V. It was 1415 and thanks to Shakespeare the speech is still quoted and compared.
“This story shall the good man teach his son;
And Crispin Crispian shall ne’er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be rememberèd-
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne’er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition;”
The Publicity Stunt
There are some amazing speeches preserved on YouTube defining moments when leaders speak to the troops and rally the crowd. This was not one of those. However, I could not help but admire the sheer brass neck of Simon Bodkin for handing Mrs May her P45. Was it politically motivated or just a publicity stunt. His ability to get so close the PM does raise a few security questions
The comedian was Simon Brodkin – also known as his TV persona Lee Nelson. He was arrested by Greater Manchester Police to prevent a breach of the peace but later released. Presumably, they were concerned he might be lynched by the party faithful. The force said he had “legitimate accreditation” to attend the event.
Sadly this conference speech will be remembered for what happened rather than what was said. Let’s talk about tax payments and refunds
Tax Payments and Tax Refunds
Despite these diversions, I am on Christmas this week. Not so much about Christmas but about what happens at that time of year, namely filing tax returns but more the payment of tax or receipt of tax refunds. I have made it my mission this week to get you to get into good habits when it comes to moving money between you and HMRC.
